Johannes Liechtenauer:

"The two concepts 'Vor' and 'Nach' ('before' and 'after') are the wellspring of all art. Mark also the terms 'Schwach' and 'Stark' ('weak' and 'strong') as well as the word 'In des' ('simultaneity'). In this way you will learn to fight and to defend yourself using art. But if you are easily frightened, you will never be able to learn to fence."
